Many people reassure themselves that they can recognize AI-generated content. We have developed common heuristics, such as the overuse of words like "delve," "underscore," and "tapestry," or a preference for complex sentence structures with numerous semicolons and em dashes. This phenomenon is not only seen in social media posts but is also seeping into academic environments. The chart showing the frequency of the word "delve" in research papers has skyrocketed unnaturally since the advent of ChatGPT - a coincidence that is impossible to ignore.
So, problem solved? If you see these patterns, it must be an AI, right?
The answer is no, or at least only partially true. Your ability to recognize AI-generated content is not due to any superhuman skill, but for a much simpler and more depressing reason: everyone is using the same AI persona - ChatGPT.

AI models are not a "representation of the internet" or "how humans write online." They are a reflection of their training data and, more importantly, the fine-tuning process conducted by their creators. After "learning to speak" from the massive internet dataset, these models are further "educated" with a much smaller dataset of what researchers consider "good writing." This process creates a "persona" - a personality, a way of speaking that is highly specific and recognizable.
In other words, you haven't become adept at detecting AI; you've merely become adept at detecting ChatGPT. I can guarantee that people using other models like Kimi from Moonshot AI (a popular model in China) with its distinct mode of expression are flying completely under our radar.
The illusion of AI detection is a trap. We think we've become proficient, but in reality, we're just recognizing uniformity. The giveaway isn't the style itself, but the fact that everyone suddenly sounds exactly the same. This is not a problem that can be solved by "being more discerning." We need a solution at a much deeper level.
Furthermore, the problem is compounded by the "feedback loop of mediocrity." As AI generates content and publishes it online, that content becomes training data for the next generation of AIs. Gradually, AI will begin to learn from its own output, leading to a phenomenon known as "model collapse." The quality, diversity, and originality of information will degrade, and the internet will become filled with recycled, rephrased versions of the same initial ideas. We risk creating a closed information ecosystem where true human creativity is diluted beyond recognition.
The Economic Erosion Of A Human-Centric Web

Instead, agent-focused advertising will be optimized for machine-readable attributes like price, return policies, shipping speeds, or detailed product specifications. The attention economy is slowly giving way to the agentic economy. Companies like Google and Meta, which thrive on advertising revenue, will face an existential crisis as their business model becomes obsolete. The winners in this new era will be the companies providing the best AI agents (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic) and businesses with clean, well-documented APIs that agents can interact with efficiently.
The Search For A Pulse: Solutions And Their Perils
So, what can we do? It seems we are reaching a point where verifying "humanness" online is becoming essential. We need mechanisms to distinguish between humans and machines, allowing users to choose whether they want to interact with machines or seek meaningful human connections.
1. Proof Of Humanhood (PoH)
This is a concept that sounds foreign but is desperately needed. Several notable proposals have emerged.
Blockchain-Based Solutions: A joint effort by several organizations, including OpenAI, Microsoft, and Oxford University, has proposed a system that uses blockchain technology to ensure decentralized, anonymous, and permissionless authentication. This system would issue 'Personhood IDs' that users can use to prove they are human across different platforms, thereby blocking bots from impersonating them. 3. The Rise Of "Digital Oases"

As the public spaces of the internet become increasingly noisy and soulless, humans will naturally gravitate toward more private, curated spaces. I believe social media will gradually fragment into a collection of gated communities with extremely strict anti-AI policies. These could be paid forums, private Discord/Slack servers, or a renaissance of personal newsletters and blogs. Platforms focused on long-form, high-quality content like Medium or Substack are perfectly positioned to capitalize on this trend, becoming "oases" for those weary of synthetic interactions and mass-produced content.
The Genie Is Out Of The Bottle

There is no "turning off AI." It is far too late for that. But we need to start acknowledging what is happening and implement remedies. While some companies, like Meta, are doubling down on AI-generated content for social media, I believe this approach will ultimately backfire. The core purpose of social media is to foster a sense of connection in an era where we are more disconnected than ever. Filling it with synthetic interactions will only erode its fundamental value proposition.
To me, the Dead Internet Theory is spot-on. The internet feels broken. It's no longer a place to discover unique voices, but an endless echo chamber of the same few ideas. Therefore, having an agent-focused or human-focused authentication layer seems inevitable and, on the whole, a net positive.
However, we must be extremely cautious about who owns this layer. A centralized system could easily become the perfect tool for mass surveillance, where your every action online leaves an indelible trace. Decentralized solutions like blockchain promise an anonymous, user-controlled system, but whether there is enough economic and political incentive to allow such a system to thrive remains an open question.
The "Dead Internet" doesn't necessarily mean an absence of humans, but the dilution of humanity to the point of being unrecognizable. Our challenge is not to kill AI, but to build new systems, norms, and spaces that allow us to find and cherish human connection amidst the noise. It is a struggle to preserve the soul of the global network - a struggle we cannot afford to lose.
