🏆 Claude Code vs ChatGPT Codex: Honest 100 Hours Testing. Which AI Tool Wins Each Job?

Honest test uncovers the hidden strengths, weaknesses, and best use cases of both. You’ll see which tool fits which job, and which one might actually save you hours of work.

TL;DR

Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex each excel at different tasks. Use Claude for creative planning, front-end design, and custom workflows. Use Codex for structured outputs, research-heavy tasks, and fast execution.

Claude Code supports Skills, Hooks, and Sub-Agents, making workflow automation flexible. It also integrates with enterprise tools via SDK, Bedrock, and Vertex AI.

Codex provides Git work trees, in-app browser, GitHub integration, and built-in image generation for efficient execution. Both tools can be combined: Claude handles planning and design, Codex handles review and shipping.

Key points

  • Claude Code used ~4.7M tokens for a research PDF; Codex used ~2.8M tokens.

  • Common mistake: assuming one tool fits all tasks.

  • Practical takeaway: match the tool to the task, and consider using both for a complete workflow.

Introduction

When I first started testing these two side by side, I thought I already knew the answer. I mean, I literally made a full course on Claude Code. I had my bias. But now, I was genuinely surprised.

Claude Code is a coding agent from Anthropic. It’s strong at front-end design, custom workflows, auto-delegation, and enterprise integration through SDK, Bedrock, and Vertex AI.

ChatGPT Codex is a coding agent from OpenAI. Codex works better for research-heavy tasks, structured outputs like PDFs and reports, code review, GitHub workflows, and has built-in image generation through GPT Image 2.

In this post, I'm breaking down the real strengths of each tool, actual test results with numbers, token efficiency, pricing, and, most importantly, when to use which one.
