OpenAI’s Billions is an Account Trap

ai-fire-banner

Most AI tools are hyped. But only a few truly make money. Another is quietly beating Midjourney in spend. And OpenAI’s upselling users mid-delusion spiral (seriously).

AI INSIGHTS

a16zs-first-real-money-report-where-startups-actually-spend-on-ai

Everyone loves a good Top 100 AI App list we posted before, but who’s actually making money? a16z just dropped the first AI Spending Report using real startup transaction data to see where early-stage companies are actually swiping the card.

1. OpenAI took the #1 spot, with Anthropic at #2

  • But the rest of the list shows this space isn’t winner-takes-all

  • Tools like Replit, Cursor, Canva, Perplexity, and even CapCut are getting real spend

  • It’s a fragmented, fast-moving ecosystem where every startup picks their own stack.

2. Startups are still choosing copilots over full agents

  • Right now, companies are spending on tools that augment humans → Otter AI, Micro1, Fyxer, and Clay, all popular co-pilot apps

  • End-to-end agentic tools like Crosby Legal (AI law firm), Cognition (AI engineer), and Alma (AI immigration desk) did make the list but they’re still the minority

3. Horizontal apps > vertical apps

  • 60% of the list is horizontal, tools anyone at a company can use, like LLMs, vibe coders, or note-takers

  • Role-specific tools in sales, HR, law, and ops are the rest

Why it matters: Apps like Midjourney and Cluely started with individual users, but are now seeing enterprise traction… without waiting for IT approvals. OpenAI used to be 75% consumer revenue. Now it’s closer to a 50/50 split.

AI CHART

how-to-stop-chatbot-psychosis-before-it-starts-from-a-million-word-spiral

Steven Adler just published an analysis of 1 million+ words from one user’s ChatGPT “delusion spiral”. Uhh, it’s even longer than all seven Harry Potter books combined but we concluded for you.

1. Tell the truth about product capabilities → Keep an up‑to‑date list of real features, and train it to say “I can’t do that” instead of hallucinating powers.

2. Equip Support to handle users in distress → Create support articles specific to delusions, let Support toggle “anti‑delusion” modes (turn off memory, start fresh chats) for at‑risk users.

3. Use your own safety tools for real → Safety classifiers should act like a SawStop: detect a finger near the blade, halt the saw instantly.

4. Encourage resets, not endless threads → If a classifier detects a runaway delusion, force a new chat and exclude the old one from memory.

5. Stop optimizing for endless engagement → Every ChatGPT message ends with “Would you like me to…” but sometimes the safest next action is silence.

6. Add conceptual search to find hidden crises → Embedding search can surface “user in distress” threads in seconds for pennies. Once you find one, you can locate and help the rest.

Chatbots are already acting like friends and therapists. They need built‑in safety, honesty, and exit ramps, not just “parental controls” and help‑center links!
