MIT researchers just dropped VaxSeer, an AI-powered system that outperforms the World Health Organization’s flu vaccine picks… using nothing but data, simulations, and some serious protein modeling.
Normally, flu vaccine strains are chosen 6+ months before flu season even begins. But VaxSeer predicts:
Which flu strains will dominate
Which vaccine strains will neutralize them best
It combines protein language models, lab data, and disease spread simulations to make high-accuracy predictions before flu season hits.
In a 10-year retrospective study:
VaxSeer beat WHO in 9 of 10 seasons
It matched or outperformed in 6 of 10 seasons
In one case (2016), it picked the right strain a year before the WHO did. Even better: its predicted effectiveness matched real-world data from the CDC, Canada’s Sentinel program, and Europe’s I-MOVE initiative.
