The raw DNA Claude was reading when it detected a repeat pattern that no one had noticed
Anthropic just launched a new life sciences research group and wet lab, and one of its first projects produced a pretty wild result: Claude helped identify a previously uncharacterized enzyme system with CRISPR-like DNA repeats.
Claude agents searched a massive DNA-sequence database containing 200,000+ reverse transcriptases.
They identified roughly 3,500 candidate systems, narrowed them to 20 promising ones, and investigated them further.
About 950 Claude agents ran for 21 hours and used roughly 210 million tokens.
One agent spotted an unusual repeating DNA pattern beside a reverse transcriptase that researchers had apparently overlooked.
Anthropic calls the newly identified system ART, or array-associated reverse transcriptase.
ART contains a reverse transcriptase, an accessory protein, and a long array of regularly spaced DNA repeats that resembles a CRISPR array.
Please note that Anthropic has not shown that ART is a new CRISPR replacement or confirmed that it can edit DNA. Its biological function is still unknown.
Anthropic says Claude handled most of the computational discovery process with only high-level direction, while human scientists performed all wet-lab experiments.

AI BREAKTHROUGH
A new study analyzed 69,632 medRxiv preprints and found a sharp rise in em-dash use after ChatGPT became widely available. Main findings:
Before ChatGPT, only 4.23% of Discussion sections contained an em-dash.
Afterward, that rose to 11.58% overall.
Usage stayed near 4% through 2023, reached 8% in 2024, then jumped to 20.3% in 2025.
The pattern survived multiple sensitivity and falsification tests.
Boilerplate sections like acknowledgments and data availability barely changed, which strengthens the idea that the shift came from changes in actual writing style.
The researchers are careful about what this means: an em-dash can’t tell you whether a specific paper was written with AI, and the study does not prove AI caused the increase. It shows a population-level writing shift that happened alongside the rise of LLM writing tools.
→ AI may already be leaving measurable stylistic fingerprints across scientific writing, but those signals work much better for spotting broad trends than detecting AI use in one individual paper.
