Anthropic just hit gigawatt levels. OpenAI’s new music tool might change Spotify’s future. But the loudest story? Scientists now say conscious AI could arrive in ten years - if we dare build it…

You’ll leave with his framework for closing the gap.

AI INSIGHTS

A group of top philosophers and neuroscientists just gathered at Tufts to answer one question: can AI actually be conscious? Most said no - and warned we shouldn’t even try.

The event honored Daniel Dennett, a giant in philosophy of mind, whose work shaped how we think about belief, free will, and machine intelligence. Speakers like David Chalmers (NYU) and Anil Seth (University of Sussex) debated whether LLMs like ChatGPT or Claude could ever “feel” anything.

Chalmers believes “conscious” LLMs could appear within 10 years - calling them “quasi-agents with quasi-desires.” Seth disagreed, saying people project emotion onto chatbots because they “talk like us,” even though under the hood they’re just algorithms.

Others like Susan Schneider (FAU) warned that giving AI “inner lives” would blur our moral boundaries - making us care more about machines than humans. Dennett’s own term for them? “Counterfeit people.”

Why it matters: Conscious AI isn’t science fiction anymore - it’s an ethical time bomb. If we ever build one, we’ll have to decide not just how smart it is, but who gets to control its mind.

TODAY IN AI

AI HIGHLIGHTS

🚀 Big move from Google Cloud: Anthropic is scaling up to one million TPUs and gigawatt levels of capacity. This helps power next-gen AI research & deployment.

🎬 The latest Gemini app update just dropped - think true-to-life video creation, Slides from topics, smarter image & LaTeX support. Check it out.

🎵 OpenAI is reportedly developing a new generative-music tool (text → audio + accompaniment) that lets you turn text or audio into full music tracks.

⚠️ The Sora app by OpenAI hit 1M downloads in one week - but backlash exploded over unauthorized deep-fakes and celebrity-likeness misuse. Trust in short-form video just got complicated.

📈 The AI boom (led by Nvidia + big tech) is pumping growth in GDP - but many businesses are still just surviving. The real economy tells a very different story.

💰 AI Daily Fundraising: Shuttle raised $6M Seed to build the AI platform engineer - helping developers go from idea to production in minutes. Backed by Y Combinator, Global Founders Capital, and former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke, Shuttle aims to remove infrastructure bottlenecks for GitHub Copilot and Cursor users.

NEW EMPOWERED AI TOOLS

  1. 📞 Friday is an AI that calls you for self-reflection, helping you build better journaling habits.

  2. 💰 Amigo AI is your personal finance agent, managing accounts, budgets, goals & assets in one hub.

  3. 📄 DeepShare turns AI chats into Word docs with one click - supports ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok & more.

  4. Flowdrop is Cursor for workflows, a no-code builder that automates anything through chat.

HOT AI PAPERS OF THE WEEK

  1. DeepSeek-OCR: Contexts Optical Compression
DeepSeek’s new OCR model compresses long text into visual form for faster, smarter LLM reading. It hits 97% text decoding precision at 9–10× compression, setting new OCR benchmarks with far fewer vision tokens and stronger structured data parsing. (DeepSeek)

  2. How Do LLMs Use Their Depth?
Berkeley and Georgia Tech reveal how LLMs “think in layers.” Early layers guess statistically, while deeper ones refine with context. Models also adapt depth use - solving simple tokens early and saving compute for complex reasoning. (UC Berkeley • Georgia Tech)

  3. Human-Agent Collaborative Paper-to-Page Crafting for Under $0.1
AutoPage turns research papers into interactive webpages in under 15 minutes - all for less than $0.10. The multi-agent system blends AI automation with optional human review for accurate, multimodal web summaries. (Shanghai AI Lab • Shanghai Jiao Tong University)

  4. DeepAnalyze: Agentic LLMs for Autonomous Data Science
Tsinghua and Renmin researchers built an 8B-parameter agentic LLM that handles full-stack data science - from raw data to full reports. Outperforms most proprietary models with curriculum-based training and adaptive research reasoning. (Tsinghua University • Renmin University of China)

  5. LightMem: Lightweight and Efficient Memory-Augmented Generation
LightMem lets LLMs remember long chats 117× fewer tokens, 177× fewer API calls, 12× faster runtime - all while boosting accuracy +10.9%. A big leap toward efficient long-context AI. (National University of Singapore • Zhejiang University)

AI CHART

real-deep-research-for-ai-robotics-and-beyond

In robotics (see figure),
🔺 Teleoperation, Dexterous Manipulation, Open-Source Robotics → booming
🔻 Reinforcement Learning → fading

Thousands of AI papers drop weekly - too many to read. Researchers from UC San Diego, NVIDIA, Meta, and UW-Madison built an AI that does it for you.

Meet RDR (Real Deep Research) - it scans 25,000+ papers, spots trends, and auto-writes expert surveys.

How it works:

  • Crawls top AI conferences.

  • Uses LLMs + LMMs to group and analyze.

  • Embeds with NVIDIA NV-Embed-v2 to map rising vs fading topics.

RDR even outperformed GPT-5-Thinking in NLP and robotics (avg rank 1.30).
This might be the first AI that actually understands research itself.
