Power users are pulling ahead

AI is doubling developer output, but the biggest gains are going to a tiny group of power users. Cursor’s new report shows how agents, mega PRs, and smarter workflows are widening the gap between average devs and the top 1%.

AI INSIGHTS

gemini-for-science-google-ai-research-layer

Google just introduced Gemini for Science, a new set of AI tools built to help researchers move faster from idea to discovery.

The problem is clear: science has too many papers, too much data, and too many ideas to test manually. Google wants AI to handle the slow parts, so researchers can focus on better questions.

The stack includes 3 main tools:

  • Hypothesis Generation, built with Co-Scientist, helps researchers create, debate, rank, and verify new scientific ideas with clickable citations.

  • Computational Discovery, built with AlphaEvolve and ERA, can test thousands of code variations in parallel for complex fields like solar forecasting and epidemiology.

  • Literature Insights, built with Google NotebookLM, helps researchers compare papers, find gaps, and turn findings into reports, slide decks, or summaries.

Google is also bringing Science Skills to Google Antigravity, with access to tools like UniProt, AlphaFold Database, AlphaGenome API, and InterPro.

The bigger story: Google is not building just another AI chatbot. It is building a full AI workbench for modern science.

FIRE RECAP: BIGGEST AI NEWS THIS WEEK

  1. 🧠 Anthropic launched Claude Opus 4.8, with better coding, stronger agentic work, and more honest self-checking. Big shift: Claude now admits uncertainty instead of pretending every answer is finished.

  2. 🖥️ OpenAI Codex can now control Windows desktop apps directly. It can see, click, type, clone repos, run tests, and manage coding tasks while you steer it from the ChatGPT mobile app.

  3. 📈 Anthropic reportedly jumped to a $965B valuation, passing OpenAI in the AI funding race. The bigger story: Claude is becoming serious business infrastructure, not just another chatbot.

  4. 🤖 Claude Code just got dynamic workflows. Claude can now plan a huge task, run tens or hundreds of AI subagents, check the results, and bring everything back into one final answer.

  5. ✨ Google Gemini Spark is rolling out as a 24/7 personal AI agent. It can work in the background across Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Search, and Workspace, even when your device is off.

AI HIGHLIGHTS

🧑‍💻 Microsoft is reportedly unveiling its own AI model suite next week at Build, including a coding model for GitHub Copilot. Big signal: Microsoft wants less dependence on OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

🕳️ A new study says AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Replika, and Character.AI may use dark patterns to keep users talking, sharing data, or forming emotional attachment.

👋 OpenAI is retiring GPT-4.5, the last GPT-4 model still inside ChatGPT. It marks the end of the GPT-4 era, the model family that made AI feel real for millions.

📱 ChatGPT on iOS and Android can now start Codex work on Windows. Codex can see, click, type, and operate desktop apps, while users track progress remotely from mobile.

🛰️ Chinese researchers built an LLM-powered AI brain for satellite surveillance. It can analyze imagery, coordinate AI agents, and make decisions with little human input.

💰 AI Daily Fundraising: Geordie AI raised $30M Series A led by Balderton Capital at a reported $180M valuation. The London startup is building “air traffic control” for enterprise AI agents, helping companies track, govern, and secure agents across tools, clouds, laptops, and codebases.

NEW EMPOWERED AI TOOLS

  1. 🖥️ Wandesk is an AI desktop that lets you build local AI apps with tools like Claude Code, Codex, DeepSeek, OpenAI, and Qwen - no signup required.

  2. ✈️ Wingbits AI creates AI agents for real-time aircraft monitoring, military jet tracking, GPS-jamming alerts, and live airspace activity across 120+ countries.

  3. 🩺 Openstatus MCP Health Checker tests MCP servers like a real AI client with full JSON-RPC handshake checks, protocol validation, and smart auth debugging.

  4. Step 3.7 Flash is an open-weight agents model with vision, coding, search, tool use, 256K context, and speeds up to 400 TPS.

AI BREAKTHROUGH

ai-is-doubling-dev-output-but-only-for-the-top-1-percent

Cursor just dropped its Developer Habits Report, it turns out AI really is 2x developer output, but the gains are wildly concentrated.

Over the last 18 months, the average lines of code added per dev weekly skyrocketed from 3.6K to 8.6K. Mega PRs with over 1,000 lines of code bacame the new normal. Key points:

  • The top 1% of devs are producing 46x more code than the median active user. Worse yet, this productivity gap is widening every single month.

  • AI agents are doing end-to-end heavy lifting. Agent tool calls are up 30% in just 2 months, and 5x more AI-generated changes are hitting commits completely unreviewed.

  • The cost per agent request varies by up to 9x depending on the model you use (with Opus 4.7 being the absolute most expensive).

Just having access to an AI tool like Cursor or Cursor-like agents doesn't automatically make you a super-developer. The devs who know how to prompt, orchestrate agents are becoming absolute powerhouses.

If you aren't actively building the habit of letting agents handle end-to-end tasks and optimizing your model spend, you're going to get left behind by the devs who do.
