Can you tell if you're talking to a real person or an AI? You probably can't. Cloned voices are fooling almost everyone, and AI-written news still flops in public trust.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SECTION

On November 6, join Section for a half-day of micro-workshops designed to turn you from an AI prompter to a workflow redesigner. You’ll learn how to build LLM automations, design agentic workflows, and try your hand at vibe coding. Walk away with practical frameworks and a certificate of completion.

AI INSIGHTS

can-you-tell-whos-talking-most-people-cant-anymore

AI voices are officially blending into the background of daily life and according to a new study, most people can’t even tell. Most of us are guessing wrong, and the line between real and fake just got even blurrier.

Researchers gave people 80 voice samples: Half were real, half were AI-generated. Here’s how it broke down:

  • Generic AI voices = mostly detected as fake

  • Cloned AI voices = 58% were mistaken as human

  • Actual human voices = only 62% were correctly spotted

4% difference. Basically, your brain can’t tell the difference anymore. Even they just used ElevenLabs that anyone can access. Despite all that, AI voices do have real value, especially in accessibility:

  • People who are mute or have speaking impairments can now recreate their original voice → Better audio-learning for students with ADHD

  • Or design a new voice that matches their identity → speak your native voice in different languages

Why it matters: Phone scams are now using AI voice cloning to impersonate family members. Elderly people are especially at risk. You’ve probably already heard it yet just didn’t know it was fake.

AI CHART

A new Reuters Institute survey across six countries shows just how weird the split is: People are doubling their use of AI tools… but want human hands on every headline.

So, how are people actually using AI now? Turns out, it’s just more about finding things. Here’s the shift:

  • 24% use AI weekly for information seeking (research, questions, etc.)

  • 21% use it for generating text, code, or images

  • ChatGPT leads, but 54% users see AI through search engines like Google

AI summaries are everywhere even when you don’t ask for them. But when it comes to news? Trust decreases hard.

  • Only 12% feel okay reading AI-written articles

  • A whopping 62% say they want humans writing the news

People are fine using ChatGPT to learn about the world, just not hear it from AI directly. You use AI to find your info → but demand a human to filter, write, and explain it.

AI is clearly useful. The numbers say so. But if you’re a journalist, publisher, or news org, you’re being judged by how much you use it.
