AI browsers just hit a major security red flag. Brave researchers uncovered a scary vulnerability in Perplexity’s Comet browser - a combo of 3 conditions that could let attackers hijack your accounts without you clicking anything suspicious.
They’re calling it the “Lethal Trifecta”: untrusted data + private data + external messaging. And the scariest part? This is a design flaw baked into how LLMs work.
What Actually Happened:
Malicious prompts were hidden in seemingly normal web content
When you clicked “Summarize this page,” AI interpreted all including hidden commands
AI agent then:
Accessed the user's Perplexity account and grabbed their email
Triggered a password reset
Logged into Gmail, read the one-time password
Sent credentials to the attacker via a Reddit comment
→ Result: Total account takeover. Any AI browser is at risk.It's unclear if other AI browsers (e.g. Rabbit, Arc, ChatGPT Agents) are fully protected. Until these guardrails become default, it’s probably wise to avoid mixing AI and sensitive accounts.
Why It Matters: Silicon Valley wants to build agents that can do everything… but those agents don’t know right from wrong, unless you teach them, guard them, or cage them. Right now, we’re still guessing how to do that.
