What happens when one of the most respected minds in AI tells Silicon Valley to chill out? Andrej Karpathy, ex-OpenAI cofounder and former Tesla AI leadm took the mic basically deflated the “year of AI agents” hype.
Karpathy thinks we’re at least 10 years away. His most brutal takes:
Agentic coding is slop. Reinforcement learning is terrible
Perfect memory is a bug. Agents don’t work
Reliability isn’t close. Getting from 99% to 99.9% accuracy takes as long as going from 0% to 90%. We’re nowhere near either.
Basically, Karpathy’s saying that the tools hyped as “AI employees” are still interns who need hand-holding.
Of course, Elon Musk (naturally) fired back on X & challenged Karpathy to “go head-to-head with Grok 5.”
Since ChatGPT launched, tech markets have added $14T in valuation based on the idea AI will automate everything. if Karpathy’s right, we’re in for a decade-long grind.
Why it matters: We love the honesty here. The AI hype machine’s been running full of “autonomous agents! infinite coders! digital CEOs!”. Every video with Karpathy is a pleasure to watch. I don't know anyone more pleasant than him.

AI CHART
Researchers at UMass Amherst just built the first artificial neuron that can actually “talk” to real brain cells by whispering at the same level as real neurons → about 0.1 volts.
That might sound small, but it’s a huge deal. Previous artificial neurons were basically shouting at brain cells, using 10x more voltage & burning 100x more power.
They used protein nanowires that literally makes electricity, and these bacteria-grown nanowires are:
Stable in wet, biological environments (perfect for interfacing with living tissue)
Ultra low-voltage (just 0.1V, same as biological neurons)
Extremely energy-efficient, needing 100x less power than previous designs
That means, for the first time, we have an artificial neuron that can gently communicate with real biological tissue.
Perhaps in the future we may have wearable devices or neural implants that talk directly to our nervous system (just our prediction if everything goes well, but you know…)
