Plus: AI’s rare-skill secret

Google says Britain’s AI adoption just doubled. But the real advantage may not come from using Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude once in a while - it comes from turning AI into a weekly work habit that can change your career.

AI INSIGHTS

Google UK and Public First just released a new report on how fast AI is spreading across Britain.

The headline is big: 73% of the British workforce now uses AI, up from 34% last year.

But the real story is not just adoption. It’s the gap between people who “try AI” and people who actually use it well.

Google splits UK AI users into four groups:

  • AI Spectators: 10% - Not using AI in daily life yet.

  • AI Experimenters: 38% - Use AI for quick questions and simple drafts.

  • AI Practitioners: 37% - Use AI more often for writing, research, and problem-solving.

  • AI Trailblazers: 15% - Use AI for deeper work, automation, and agents.

The Trailblazers are where it gets interesting.

They save around 7.7 hours per week, and they are more likely to report:

  • +84% higher chance of being promoted

  • +55% higher chance of getting a pay rise

  • +157% higher chance of feeling career progress

  • +88% higher chance of getting a positive performance review

Google is also tying this to its bigger UK push: Gemini, Google DeepMind, Google Digital Garage, and its new AI Works for Britain training program.

The useful lesson here is simple: the advantage is not just having access to AI.

The advantage comes from building better habits: asking clearer questions, reusing workflows, using AI to critique your work, and applying it to repeated tasks.

AI adoption is now normal. The next race is who can use it with skill.

AI BREAKTHROUGH

bigger-ai-models-learn-more-secret-of-rare-task-retention

If you've been wondering why scaling up a model's size suddenly unlocks obscure, rare abilities that smaller models completely miss, a new joint paper from Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and Anthropic just mapped out exactly how it happens:

  • Larger models have the physical space to protect weak learning signals. They can retain rare skills because they don't have to overwrite them to make room for more common data.

  • A smaller model might actually pick up a rare signal briefly. However, because space is limited, the very next wave of common-task updates overwrites that rare skill before it appears often enough to become stable knowledge.

  • Testing this on OLMo language models scaling from 4M to 4B parameters, the data showed that larger models experience much less gradient interference.

The researchers highlight that the core issue is the training dynamics itself. When common tasks constantly push on the same limited pool of parameters, the rare data simply gets bullied out of the model's memory.

That extra neural real estate allows larger models to hold onto weak, low-frequency signals long enough for the training run to cement them into actual, permanently learned skills.
