OpenAI just inked a $38 billion deal with AWS over the next few years. Wait… weren’t they Microsoft’s golden child? That’s the same OpenAI Microsoft poured $13B into.
This deal is waay more than cloud credits. It’s about power, freedom, and prepping for something big (hello IPO?).
→ OpenAI is getting access to tons of NVIDIA GPUs, spread across Amazon’s existing and new data centers.
And they’re not slowing down, OpenAI plans to spend over $1.4 trillion on compute infra over the next decade. This AWS chunk is just one tile in that giant AI jigsaw.
The deal kicks in now, not “sometime soon.” What about Microsoft? Until last week, Microsoft had a deal that gave them first dibs on any OpenAI infra spend. It’s gone.
Now? They’re multi-cloud and free to shop around. They still spend big on Azure ($250B committed), but now they’re also cozy with AWS, Google, Oracle, CoreWeave, you name it.
Amazon is also the main backer of Anthropic, one of OpenAI’s fiercest rivals. Now they’re hosting both. You can think of AWS as the neutral Switzerland in the AI wars.

AI is already straining Earth’s infrastructure, but Google just revealed its wildest plan yet: launching datacenters into space. The plan: Datacenters in orbit by 2027:
Project Suncatcher: Google wants to deploy 80+ solar-powered satellites carrying AI processors into low Earth orbit (~400 miles)
Launch timeline: 2 prototypes planned for early 2027
Powered by solar arrays, with data sent back via free-space optical links
Hmm, in theory, it makes sense actually. Solar panels in space are 8× more efficient than on Earth (no clouds, no night, no shade). No need for water or land to cool giant server farms.
Launch costs are dropping fast, by 2030s, the cost of a space datacenter might match Earth-based ones.
BUT, launching rockets still creates a ton of CO₂, even if long-term impact is better. Astronomers are already annoyed, more satellites = more sky clutter (“bugs on a windshield” effect).
Even Elon Musk says Starlink and SpaceX are building in-space datacenters too. Nvidia’s AI chips are going to space this month, via startup Starcloud.
