💸 This OpenRouter Trick Literally Lets Anyone Run Claude Code for Free or Nearly Free (Full Guide)

You'll actually route Claude Code through free OpenRouter models, even keep working after credits run out, and build a much more affordable AI coding setup.

TL;DR

Claude Code free is possible by routing Claude Code through OpenRouter and using a free model like Stealth OX Alpha instead of Claude. This works best as a backup when your Claude credits run low.

You still keep the useful Claude Code harness: files, tools, skills, memory, project context, and sub-agents. The setup runs through VS Code, another IDE, or terminal, not the Claude Code desktop app.

The tradeoff is speed and reliability. In testing, front-end tasks, lead list audits, and simple workspace workflows worked, but larger jobs took longer and some research tasks hit timeout or API errors.

Key points

  • Around 61M tokens cost about 13 cents in one heavy test.

  • Don’t put private data into unknown or anonymous model providers.

  • Use OpenRouter Claude Code for light, low-risk tasks after credits run out.

Introduction

I bet you've seen Claude Code everywhere. It's powerful. It's great. But the credits run out... fast. 😅

So when I saw people running Claude Code with completely free models, I had to try it. FYI, I'm using another model through OpenRouter, but still inside the Claude Code harness.

At first, one of the most popular options was Stealth Ox Alpha. But that's changed. It was revealed to be GLM-5.3-Flash, and the hosted route is no longer free.

But luckily, the model itself is open, and there are still other free routes you can use right now. So in this guide, I'll show you:

  • How to run free or nearly free models inside Claude Code

  • How to set up OpenRouter

  • Which free models you can use now

  • And most importantly... whether this actually works

Because running a free model inside Claude Code sounds great. But can it actually code? Let's find out.
