This weekend, 6 mysterious models: Zenith, Summit, Lobster, Starfish, Nectarine, and o3-alpha - appeared on LM Arena and started crushing coding tasks. And the AI community immediately caught on: this smells like GPT‑5, piece by piece:
Summit generated 2,300+ lines of working starship UI code - on the first try.
Zenith and o3-alpha are elite at reasoning and coding.
Lobster and Starfish seem like lightweight or open-source variants.
Then they disappeared. Classic OpenAI.
The theory? These are GPT‑5 fragments, part of a mixture-of-experts system, which will later be fused into a unified GPT‑5 system.
The strategy is genius. They’re running live A/B tests on future AI cognition.
Even Claude Sonnet 4, long the coding champ, is reportedly getting outpaced. And yeah, Grok 4 might still be cheaper, but GPT‑5? It’s looking like the heavyweight.
This modular, MoE-style architecture is likely to persist through GPT‑8 (skip 6,7?) (yes, that’s already on their roadmap).
And when GPT‑5 officially drops, it’ll feel less like a surprise and more like the completion of something we’ve already met.
Why It Matters: This is ‘Shipmas in July’. We’re watching OpenAI construct its next frontier model live, and instead of staging a surprise, they’re inviting the whole internet to participate.
Will GPT‑5 outperform Claude Opus? Will it be modular and API-friendly? Will Lobster get a sequel? Too early to tell.

AI VISION
Just a few days earlier, the U.S. released its own AI Action Plan, emphasizing deregulation, industry partnerships, and maintaining a lead in AI innovation. Phrases like “race to global dominance” were front and center.
While the U.S. is sprinting toward AI dominance, China is playing a very different game. At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, China unveiled its AI Action Plan.
What’s actually in the plan?
Global cooperation: Joint AI research, open dataset/model sharing, and shared compute infrastructure.
Education & access: Focused AI upskilling for developing nations, giving them a seat at the table.
Governance: Calls for risk management frameworks and AI ethics policies built with help from the United Nations.
Open-source push: Encouraging the global dev community to co-develop AI tools, rather than rely on Western black-box APIs.
So we’ve got 2 very different AI philosophies:
U.S. = faster, richer, closed
China = broader, shared, open
Open models and shared datasets are positioned as alternatives to Western AI silos like OpenAI or Google.
→ And if they pull it off, China might become the AI ally for the Global South, while the U.S. focuses on private-sector giants like OpenAI, Meta, and Google.
