Claude just beat ChatGPT in the App Store… OpenAI released GPT-5.4… and ByteDance built an AI that speeds up GPUs. But the biggest story this week might be the Pentagon controversy around AI.

AI INSIGHTS

Most AI coding tools write code. ByteDance’s CUDA Agent goes one step further → it writes fast CUDA kernels.

CUDA kernels run custom operations on NVIDIA GPUs. But performance depends on tricky hardware details like warps, memory bandwidth, and bank conflicts. Code can compile correctly and still run slow.

So CUDA Agent trains differently.

Instead of rewarding compile success, it learns from real GPU profiling speed in a controlled environment.

Results look strong:

  • 98.8% pass rate on KernelBench

  • 96.8% of kernels faster than torch.compile

  • 2.11× average speedup vs torch.compile

  • 90% faster-than-compile on hardest Level-3 tasks

ByteDance also released CUDA-Agent-Ops-6K, a dataset with 6,000 CUDA optimization tasks for training and benchmarking.

Why it matters: AI coding tools are starting to optimize hardware-level performance, not just generate code. That could speed up AI training, inference, and GPU software stacks.

FIRE RECAP: BIGGEST AI NEWS THIS WEEK

  1. ⚠️ The biggest AI controversy this week: OpenAI Pentagon deal. OpenAI agreed to provide AI models to the U.S. Department of Defense, triggering employee protests and public backlash. Some staff reportedly resigned, and ChatGPT downloads dipped.

  2. 🥇 A surprise shift in the AI race: Claude became the #1 AI app in the U.S. App Store, overtaking ChatGPT and Gemini after the recent ethics debates around OpenAI.

  3. 🚀 OpenAI released GPT-5.4, a major model upgrade with native computer-use mode, direct Excel and Google Sheets integrations, and ~47% lower token usage on some tasks.

  4. 🛠️ Anthropic launched the Claude Marketplace, letting companies build tools on Claude. Early partners include Replit, GitLab, and Harvey.

  5. 🧠 Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang hinted at reducing new AI lab investments, even though Nvidia GPUs still power most of the industry.

AI BREAKTHROUGH

one-model-learned-text-images-and-video-together

Researchers from Meta, including Yann LeCun and Saining Xie, trained a model on text, images, and video at the same time from scratch.

Most AI systems start with a language model and add vision later. This study tested a fully unified multimodal model instead.

Key findings:

  • Language and vision improve each other when trained together

  • Vision needs much more data than language when scaling

  • MoE architecture helps balance language and vision capacity

The takeaway: Future AI models may learn text, images, and video together from the start, not as separate systems.
