A June MIT study claimed using AI creates “cognitive debt.” They say ChatGPT’s making us lazy & dumb. But none of this is new, we already talked about this before.
We’ve blamed every major tech shift, from Google to TV to calculators, for destroying our brains. The real problem is our education system hasn’t evolved since the 1930s. Here’s what the AI-is-making-us-dumb argument sounds like:
In 2023, researchers said IQ scores dropped between 2006–2018
Social media & smartphones are the easy targets
But IQ scores are notoriously shaky, and correlation ≠ causation
You’ll hear terms like “cognitive offload” and “mental muscles atrophying.” One critic even said social media gives us a “crowdsourced lobotomy.”
Another said our world is becoming “stupidogenic”, like “obesogenic,” but for thinking. And sure, maybe there’s some truth to that. What they don’t tell you:

The real issue: many students today can’t do third-grade math. But that’s not AI’s fault, it’s the school system. AI doesn’t make us dumb unless we let it.

Google just released a full breakdown of how Gemini 3 Pro’s vision system got smarter across 4 major areas: documents, screens, spatial reasoning, and video understanding.
📄 Documents → Structured, Searchable Code → Google demoed this using a 62-page Census report, and it scored 80.5% on the CharXiv benchmark.
📐 Spatial Reasoning → Pixel-Precise Understanding → The model can output coordinates, map paths over time, and refer to objects with open vocabulary (e.g. “point to the screw”).
🖥️ UI/Screen Understanding → Agent-Ready → It read a spreadsheet UI, created a pivot table, and summarized revenue, exactly the type of repeatable task AI agents need to automate workflows.
