AI INSIGHTS

TL;DR: Google isn’t trying to out-benchmark NVIDIA. It’s trying to make AI compute cheap enough to win the market by default.

There’s been buzz lately that Meta and Anthropic may spend billions on Google TPUs. That’s got NVIDIA nervous cause that kind of shift could shave 10% off NVIDIA’s AI revenue over time. And they’re fighting back.

They’re pointing at TPUs, Google’s custom AI chips, and calling them locked-in, narrow-purpose, inflexible. Meanwhile, NVIDIA GPUs + CUDA:

  • Work with nearly any model, anywhere

  • Can handle training + inference

  • Run on any cloud or on-prem setup

Basically: “We’re the default platform.” Instead of trying to win benchmarks, Google’s cutting out the middlemen:

  • TPUs are built in-house & sold through Google Cloud at cost

  • Unlike NVIDIA’s ~70% markup, they own the entire stack: chips → data center → software → apps

That means they can underprice everyone else, and still make money through other services. If 90%+ of spend goes to inference, then the only thing that matters is cost-per-token at scale. And that’s Google’s whole plan.

Not DeepMind’s AlphaMissense made headlines for flagging potentially harmful DNA mutations, Harvard Medical School dropped a new contender: popEVE.

It cuts false positives by over 75%, and is already helping diagnose kids with developmental disorders that stumped doctors for years. How?

  • It analyzes mutation patterns across hundreds of thousands of species

  • Then calibrates its predictions using massive databases of healthy human genomes

  • The result is a ranking system that tells doctors which variants actually matter

Researchers ran popEVE on 31K undiagnosed children with severe developmental issues.
→ It solved 1 in 3 cases that had previously gone unexplained.
→ It flagged 120+ new genes no one had linked to disease before.
→ At least 24 of those genes have already been verified by other teams.

In short, popEVE isn’t just helping us understand what mutations are dangerous, it’s teaching us which ones truly matter, and who they’re affecting!
