AI INSIGHTS

The AI boom is now about who has the compute to train them. And as of mid-2025, xAI’s Colossus supercomputer is officially the biggest beast on the planet → capable of training GPT-3 in under 2 hours. But it’s not alone. Meta, OpenAI, Oracle, and Tesla are scaling up fast, while Google and Amazon are suspiciously silent.

Key Points:

  • xAI Colossus: Now #1 worldwide clocking in at 200,000 H100-equivalent GPUs.

  • Compute Power = Model Power: Colossus can hit 20.6 non-sparse base-10 performance. We’re no longer talking weeks or days, it’s now hours.

  • Big Tech’s Billion-Dollar GPU Wars: Meta, Microsoft/OpenAI, and Oracle all operate clusters with 65K–100K GPUs. Tesla also joins the list with 50K GPUs in Cortex Phase 1. Most of the top 10 are U.S.-based.

  • Noticeably Absent: Google & Amazon: While dominating in AI model development, both have not disclosed their supercomputer specs.
→ It’s likely they’re building in stealth, or guarding trade secrets.

The cost of building and running these clusters is doubling every 13 months → a massive financial strain on even the biggest players.

Whoever controls the chips, controls the next wave of AI. Like oil refineries or fiber-optic cables, GPU clusters are strategic infrastructure. That’s why national labs like Lawrence Livermore are scaling, too.

Why It Matters: If you're in AI, you need access to compute. If you're not, your models, agents, and tools may be built by whoever can afford to train them. It’s compute season. And xAI just fired the loudest shot.

AI CHART

Ever wish you could read a 2,000-year-old Roman inscription that’s been shattered into pieces? Now you can, with help from AI.

Yesterday, DeepMind quietly dropped Aeneas - a fully open-source tool that reads, analyzes, and reconstructs ancient Roman texts using both images and fragments. And it’s shockingly good at it.

You give Aeneas a broken stone inscription - faded letters, maybe a photo - and it pulls from a database of 176,000 ancient writings to guess where it’s from, when it was written, and what it used to say, with:

  • 72% accuracy in assigning inscriptions to the right Roman province

  • Restores broken or missing text with 73% accuracy

  • 90% of historians said it boosted their confidence by 44%

It’s free and open-source. Researchers can download the model, fine-tune it, and even adapt it to other ancient languages. Now we just need someone to build a Claude-powered Indiana Jones mode…
