A team gave AI a kind of “inner voice” so it can spot its own confusion and fix itself mid-thought. Also, AI is getting better at predicting the weather than physics!?

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SECTION

On February 4 from 2 - 3 PM ET, join Klaviyo’s AI Transformation Lead as she shares how she got her entire team personally committed to their AI strategy by the end of last year.

AI INSIGHTS

giving-ais-an-inner-monologue-so-ais-know-theyre-wrong

A group of researchers just dropped a framework that gives AI something like metacognition, aka the ability to think about its own thinking.

It doesn’t make AIs conscious (let’s chill), but it does give them tools to detect confusion, evaluate confidence, decide when to slow down and rethink an answer.

You can think of it as a five-part sensor system that lets LLMs assess their own reasoning as they go. The five dimensions it tracks:

  • Confidence – How sure am I?

  • Conflict detection – Am I contradicting myself?

  • Experience matching – Have I seen this before?

  • Emotional awareness – Is this emotionally loaded content?

  • Problem importance – Is this worth slowing down for?

These become part of a “metacognitive state vector”, a set of internal signals that tell the AI when to shift gears from fast guessing (System 1) to deeper reasoning (System 2).

Instead of black box “because I said so” answers, we get explainable steps like “I chose this strategy because I was 92% confident and saw no internal conflict.”

AI TOOLS RANKING FROM AI FIRE

Are you all drowning in new AI tools? Every week there’s a new "ChatGPT killer" or a new video generator, and it’s honestly exhausting trying to keep up.

That’s why our researcher, Neil Phan, made this ranking. I promise it’s worth your time today. It’s not another lazy list of apps. Here’re 4 categories he reviews:

  • Deep Research: Move beyond basic Google for academic-grade sourcing

  • Voice & Audio: Handles the emotion & the speed

  • Cinematic Video: Tools for motion control and budget-friendly speed

  • Presentation Design: How to stop fighting with PowerPoint and let AI build the logic and layout for you

If you want to move from "playing around with AI" to actually finishing professional projects in under 30 minutes, this is your roadmap. Or just leave a request to new tools you want.

AI BREAKTHROUGH

nvidia-enters-the-ai-weather-wars-just-as-government-pulls-out

At the American Meteorological Society’s annual meeting in Houston, NVIDIA released Earth-2, a fully open-source suite of AI-powered weather models, libraries, and frameworks. Here’s how Earth-2 works:

  • It uses public Earth observation data (from satellites, weather balloons, stations)

  • AI converts that chaotic data into smooth, continuous estimates of atmospheric state

So who’s this aimed at? Basically everyone who cares about climate risk: Farmers, wildfire response teams, insurance analysts, flight planners. They’re calling it the first complete accelerated AI stack for weather forecasting.

This puts NVIDIA directly up against Google, Microsoft, and Huawei, each building their own AI weather models. And it raises serious questions about what happens next.

Why now? Federal funding for traditional forecasting is drying up. The public systems that have supported farmers, insurers, and emergency planners for decades are under pressure.

So NVIDIA’s stepping in with AI. NVIDIA claims they now outperform physics-based models for short-term precipitation.
