AI INSIGHTS
Yesterday, Anthropic accidentally triggered a developer riot by updating its docs to suggest Claude Code was moving from the $20 Pro plan to the $100 Max tier. While they called it a small test, Sam Altman took the opportunity to pour a few drinks and start a social media fire.
Anthropic’s Head of Growth, Amol Avasare, had to walk back a massive doc change that affected the perceived value of their most loved tool:
They later claimed this was only intended for 2% of new sign-ups, but the 98% who weren't involved saw it and panicked.
Sam Altman replied to the drama with a series of late-night posts, including a blunt "ok boomer" and an admission that he was having "a couple of drinks."
OpenAI’s Tibo and Sam Altman doubled down on the promise that Codex will remain in the Free and $20 Plus plans.
Anthropic admitted their current plans weren't built for 2026. "Agents that run for hours weren't a thing" when they launched Max, and the cost of maintaining long-horizon sessions is clearly bleeding their margins.
OpenAI, backed by its massive Microsoft-linked infrastructure, is using this moment to predatory-price Anthropic out of the market. They are signaling that they can afford to lose money on $20 coders just to keep you in the ecosystem.

AI BREAKTHROUGH
In the 2020s, we’ve entered the Tokenmaxxing era. When NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang says he’d be alarmed if a $500k engineer didn't burn $250k in tokens, he’s describing a new, dangerous proxy for value. The article draws a brilliant, if sobering, analogy: Everclear vs. Fine Wine.
Everclear is 95% alcohol. A 1937 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is about 13%. If "more equals better," the antiseptic-grade grain alcohol is 7x superior to the world-class vintage.
Tokenmaxxing treats AI output like ABV. If a Meta engineer lands at the top of the "token leaderboard," are they a genius, or did they just ask Claude Opus to translate War and Peace into Hellenic Greek 80,000 times?
Beyond the bad KPIs, there is a technical cost to this obsession with volume: Context Bloat. When we connect AI models to systems like Salesforce via MCP, we often dump massive bundles of instructions into the window before the task even starts.
To fight the "Tokenmaxxer," Lanin proposes the Slop Index. It has one very expensive hardware requirement: A Human Being. The Slop Index uses "neurons" (thoughts) instead of "tokens" (compute) to ask the only questions that actually matter.
