AI might be the future but it's dragging us back to fossil fuels. New report from Global Energy Monitor connects two giant forces: the AI datacenter explosion, and a record-breaking global surge in gas-fired power.
As AI models get bigger, so does their appetite for power. Datacenters running GPUs at scale can’t afford downtime. They need stable, always-on energy. So… we’re going with gas.
The U.S. alone could emit 12.1B tons of CO₂ from these projects, double its current annual emissions. If the global buildout goes through, we’re looking at 53.2B tons:

Meta is building a $1.5B gas-powered datacenter in El Paso
In Western Pennsylvania, a defunct coal plant is getting revived, now as the largest gas plant in the U.S., just to power a datacenter campus
Trump has promised that companies like Microsoft will “pay their own way” for the infrastructure. But there are no real details yet.
Electricity demand in the U.S. could surge 60% by 2050, mostly due to AI. But our plan so far is… burn more gas? We’re also training the grid to depend on fossil fuels again.

AI BREAKTHROUGH
Your robot can see, but not understand what it's seeing? That’s been a giant problem in robotics for years. Now Ant Group’s robotics unit dropped LingBot-Depth, built specifically to clean up that broken depth data.
It’s an open model that lets robots fill in the holes in their depth vision, the "missing" or broken pixels that mess up their ability to interact with the real world. LingBot-Depth looks at:
The broken depth map (with holes)
The RGB image (the color photo)
Whatever depth data still makes sense
…and learns how to reconstruct the full 3D depth as if nothing was missing. During training, it literally hides big chunks of valid depth data on purpose, then forces itself to rebuild it.
This creates a tight 2D–3D understanding of objects, while keeping real-world scale. So robots can still grasp, measure, or navigate with accuracy.
China has been heavily investing in embodied AI, and this release shows they’re serious about making robots useful in messy real-world conditions.
