II. Kimi K3.1 Benchmarks & Tests
I've looked at Moonshot AI's benchmark results and independent tests from Artificial Analysis. Some results are pretty surprising, especially when you look at the cost.
1. Kimi K3.1 Pro vs. Leading AI Models
According to benchmarks published by Moonshot AI, Kimi K3.1 Pro competes closely with Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra, and other leading models.
Here are some interesting results:
Terminal-Bench 4.0: Kimi scored 65.7%, close to Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4%.
SWE Marathon: Kimi led with 51.7%, beating Claude Opus 5.5 at 46.3%.
Kimi Code Bench 3.0: Kimi scored 61.2%, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 but behind GPT-6 Astra at 66.5%.
Agents' Last Exam: Kimi reached 43.2%, slightly ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 42.6%.
These results suggest that Kimi K3.1 Pro performs well on long coding tasks and AI agent workflows. However, GPT-6 Astra still has a clear lead in Terminal-Bench Science.

2. Coding Performance vs. Cost
Performance matters, but so does the price, especially if you're running lots of coding tasks.
Moonshot AI's Terminal-Bench 4.0 chart shows the following results for Kimi K3.1 Pro:
Max effort: Around 65.7% at roughly $5.50 per task.
High effort: Around 53% at roughly $4 per task.
Meanwhile, Claude Opus 5.5 scored around 65% at nearly $14 per task in the same chart.
That makes Kimi K3.1 Pro an interesting option if you're working on large coding projects and want to keep costs under control.

3. Independent Coding Tests
Company benchmarks usually look great. But what happens when someone else runs the tests?
Artificial Analysis independently tested Kimi K3.1 Pro on Terminal-Bench 4.0, where it scored 67.2%, the highest result in the provided chart.
Here's how the top models compared:
Kimi K3.1 Pro: 67.2%
Claude Opus 5.5: 63.6%
GPT-6 Astra: 59.6%

That's a promising result because Kimi K3.1 Pro also performed well in an independent evaluation.
Still, one benchmark can't tell you how well a model will handle every real-world coding task.
4. 3D Design and CAD Tests
Kimi K3.1 Pro was also tested on BenchCAD to measure its ability to create accurate 3D models. The test uses 1,000 files and checks how closely the generated models match the expected results.
Here's how Kimi performed:
With tools: Kimi scored 92.7%, while Claude Opus 5.5 reached 96.2%.
Without tools: Kimi scored 72.8%, nearly matching Claude Opus 5.5 at 73%.
You can see that Kimi K3.1 Pro comes pretty close to Claude in CAD tasks, even without extra tools.

5. Financial Research Tests
If you work with financial reports or business data, this part is worth checking out. Moonshot AI tested Kimi K3.1 Pro on two finance-related benchmarks:
OfficeQA Pro v2: Kimi scored 64.4%, beating Claude Opus 5.5 at 62.2%.
Frontier Finance: Kimi reached 58.6%, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 56.7%, but behind Fable 5.1 at 60.8%.
These results suggest Kimi K3.1 Pro could be useful for financial research and analyzing business documents.
Of course, you should still double-check important numbers and conclusions before making financial decisions.

Overall, Kimi K3.1 Pro looks competitive in coding, AI agent workflows, and financial research, especially when you consider its cost.
But strong benchmark scores don't guarantee great results on every task. You'll still want to test Kimi K3.1 with your own work before deciding if it's the right choice.

III. Kimi K3.1 Real-World Tests
I'm especially curious about what happens when Kimi K3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 5.5 get the exact same task. Will there be a noticeable difference in quality, time, and cost?
Test 1: Interactive 3D Robotic Hand Website
In this test, Kimi K3.1 Pro was asked to create a website featuring a robotic hand that breaks apart into 2,317 individual pieces.
The result looks impressive. You can explore the robotic hand, see its internal components, and watch the parts separate through an interactive 3D animation.
It's a great example of what Kimi K3.1 Pro can create, although the demo alone doesn't tell us how much editing was needed or how well the project would handle more complex requirements.

Test 2: Advanced 3D Modeling in Blender and CAD
Kimi K3.1 Pro also supports code-based 3D modeling in Blender, Unreal Engine, Godot, and CAD software.
For example, you can see a complex 3D structure featuring a massive glass dome, greenery, and a large waterfall in the center.
Kimi K3.1 Pro also scored 92.7% on BenchCAD with tools, coming close to Claude Opus 5.5 at 96.2%.

Test 3: 3D Island Creation, Kimi vs Claude
Kimi K3.1 Pro can create 3D models, but can it match the quality of Claude Opus 5.5?
In this test, both models received the same prompt: create a 3D island with a multi-story pagoda, bridges, floating islands, and animated effects.
The results were pretty surprising. Both models created detailed 3D scenes, but the time and cost were quite different:
Kimi K3.1 Pro: Finished in 15 minutes at a cost of $5.71.
Claude Opus 5.5: Finished in 32 minutes at a cost of $17.13.
That means Kimi K3.1 Pro was about twice as fast and three times cheaper in this test, while the visual quality looked fairly similar.
If you're working on complex 3D projects, Kimi K3.1 Pro could be worth considering, especially if you want to keep costs down. However, this is just one test, so your results may vary with different projects.

Test 4: Sandworm Design, Kimi vs GPT-6 Astra
Another interesting test asked Kimi K3.1 Pro and GPT-6 Astra to create the same giant sandworm rising from the desert.
Kimi K3.1 Pro produced a more detailed design, with clearly defined panels around each body ring and a golden band around the mouth.
Meanwhile, GPT-6 Astra captured the overall shape but showed fewer details. From this example, you can see how well Kimi K3.1 Pro handles complex 3D designs with specific visual requirements.

Test 5: Sailing Ship, Kimi vs Claude
In this test, Kimi K3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 5.5 were asked to create a 3D sailing ship moving across the ocean.
Kimi K3.1 Pro produced a sharp, detailed ship with clearly defined sails, a realistic hull, and natural-looking water. The sunset lighting also made the scene feel more realistic.
Claude Opus 5.5 delivered more impressive lighting and wave effects, but Kimi K3.1 Pro still showed strong 3D modeling skills, especially when it came to the ship's sharpness and details.

IV. Kimi K3.1 Pricing
Kimi K3.1 Pro offers competitive API pricing at around two-thirds of K3's previous price, according to the published pricing chart.
You can choose between 2 versions, with prices calculated per 1 million tokens:
Pricing | Kimi K3.1 Pro | Kimi K3.1 Pro Highspeed |
|---|---|---|
Input | $2.00 | $4.00 |
Output | $10.00 | $20.00 |
Cached Input | $0.20 | $0.20 |

If you want to keep costs low, the standard Kimi K3.1 Pro is a good option. If you need faster responses, the Highspeed version runs around 2 to 3 times faster, but input and output prices are twice as high.
V. Should You Try Kimi K3.1 Pro?
Kimi K3.1 Pro is worth trying if:
You do a lot of long-horizon coding or agent workflows. It leads Claude on SWE Marathon and does well on AutomationBench.
You're building 3D content or working with CAD/Blender scripting. Performance is close and costs are lower.
You want to test an open-weight model. Weights should be public by November 4.
You're doing financial document analysis. It edges Claude on OfficeQA Pro.
Stick with Claude Opus 5.5 if:
Your work involves technical or scientific reasoning. Claude leads significantly on Terminal-Bench-Science and HLE.
You need consistent behavior on hard, multi-domain tasks. Claude's reasoning benchmarks are stronger.
You're already in a Claude Code workflow. Switching models mid-workflow has friction.
Kimi K3.1 Pro is a strong model at a competitive price, especially for coding and 3D tasks. But it's not a drop-in replacement for Claude across the board, and the launch numbers deserve a skeptical eye.
Conclusion
Kimi K3.1 Pro is giving Claude and GPT some serious competition, especially in coding and 3D creation. The benchmark results are impressive, and the real-world examples make it even more interesting.
What caught my attention most was the combination of strong performance and lower costs. You can now build some pretty complex projects without paying premium prices every time.
Of course, Kimi K3.1 Pro still has its limits, and a few impressive tests don't guarantee perfect results.
But if you're already using Claude or GPT for coding, I'd recommend giving Kimi K3.1 a try. You might be surprised by how much it can handle.
